What if?

So many what ifs regarding painting. Why so many what ifs? What if painting can't be reduced or used to explain anything outside of painting? What if it can? What if we drop the tag lines?

Me? I make paintings. So what if?

And of course what I should have said is....

No I don't feel it necessary to increase the size for its own sake. These deal with something very specific which is the way thoughts and actions develop during and in relation to painting. What I'm trying to achieve is the observation of an unconscious thought process in the first person. It takes a great amount of effort on my part to keep a clear mind and yet be alert to changes, occurrences, as they happen. To some extent this is aided by the paintings diminutive size and, of course, they roughly approximate the size of a head which in turn is a container for thoughts.

Larger supports require a different approach and certainly need some consideration; they would become more about the body and gesture I expect. I accept you would have to be prepared to throw some paint at the problem though I expect these issues would be best explored in tandem with what I'm already doing.

Yes they do look old fashioned but then they are paintings. For me the important thing is not to presume to tell anybody how things may relate, what or how to think.

.....But then, alas, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
